The radical 28 with the meaning of " private " is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals of Chinese characters that are written with two strokes.
In Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary there are only a few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon. In the Kangxi dictionary , only 40 of a total of 40,000 characters are under this radical.
The radical increases only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals with 214 radicals the 28th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 37th position.
The sign is similar to the katakana sign ム "mu" and the zhuyin sign ㄙ [s].
This radical is only found in compositions, it usually does not create any special context:
- 县 (= administrative unit district )
- 矣 ( particle at the end of the sentence )
- 参 (= to participate in something)
- 能 (= to be able)
- 勾 (= tick off).
Only in a few characters does 厶 act as a bearer of meaning, conveying the meaning privately . One of them is 公 (= public), the opposite of 私 (= private), arose from radical 12 : 八 (= separate) and radical 28: 厶 (= private).
In the pictogram we see a silkworm weaving into the cocoon. We then get the meaning "own, separate, selfish, private".
Radikal 28 is no longer an independent symbol today. It used to have the same meaning as the modern 私 (= private personal), which is formed with radical 115 : 禾 (= grain, grain) and radical 28 as a single sign. In earlier times, the farmers paid their taxes on the grain harvest, which was therefore the property of the state, a public good - what was left was the property of the peasant, was "private".
