Radical 170 , meaning " hill , dam", is one of nine traditional radicals in Chinese script that are written with eight strokes. With 81 in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are a great many characters that can be found under this radical in the dictionary.

Radikal Hügel only occupies the 170th position in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. In modern abbreviation dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is 33rd.

Spelling variant: 阝 (identical to radical 163 , but always on the left.)

The main function of the left ear is to give meaning to various signs. These have nothing to do with ears, of course, but a lot to do with terrain and topography. For example:

陆 (= mainland, with twice 土 earth on the right),
陵 (= hill),
险 (= difficult passable place, pass).

The sign 阿 (= to feed) is one of them, because it originally meant big hills. 隐 (= hide), 隔 (= separate), 障 (= block) also derive their meaning from an elevation or a depression in the terrain.

Yin and Yang , two terms from Chinese philosophy
character Abbreviation Explanation
Yīn, (with radical 74 , moon). The female principle
originally referred to the northern slope of a mountain.
Yáng, (with radical 72 , sun). The male principle
originally referred to the southern slope of a mountain.
(Compare place names such as Luoyang = north of the Luo River).

It is believed that Yin was initially the name for the colder, north-facing side of a hill and Yang was the name for the warmer, south-facing side. Gradually, Yang was equated with sunlight, while Yin became associated with shadow. It was soon deduced from this that the sun itself was yang, whereas the earth and moon were yin.
