Radical 200 , meaning “ hemp , flax , jute ” is one of six of the 214  traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with eleven strokes.

With three combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the dictionary.

The radical hemp takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 200th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 221st place.

The seal form of the character shows the component 广, which means accommodation, house , as well as twice a component, which means the separation of a grain stalk from its outer shell: grinding . 麻 (ma) shows processed hemp in a house.

The character 麻 (ma) usually functions as a sound carrier in the compound character as in 嘛 (ma, an accent), 磨 (mo = rub, scrape), 魔 (mo = devil, demon). In 糜 (mi = pulp), 靡 (= waste) and some other symbols, 麻 is also a sound carrier.
