Life
Lindqvist was a student of the eminent sinologist Bernhard Karlgren , who was the first to apply the methods of European historical linguistics to Chinese. She studied Chinese language, history and art history, as well as the musical instrument guqin .
From 1956 to 1986 she was married to the Swedish writer Sven Lindqvist , who was a cultural attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Beijing from 1960 to 1961 .
After returning from China, she went to Latin America with her husband, where she worked as a journalist. In 1970 they returned to Sweden and from 1971 onwards Cecilia Lindqvist taught at grammar schools in Stockholm . When some students asked her to learn Chinese, she got permission from the then Swedish Minister of Education, Ingvar Carlsson, and taught Chinese to 21 students for two years. Then she took them to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Almost all of these students are now working in China.
From 1974 to 1989 Cecilia Lindqvist wrote her book Hanzi Wangguo or the Kingdom of Characters , which was published in German under the title A World of Characters ( Chinese 漢字 王國 , Pinyin Hànzì Wángguó ).
In 1994 she began her book on the Chinese musical instrument Qin ( Chinese 古琴 , Pinyin gǔqín ), for which it took her 13 years.
After completing her master's degree in philosophy, Lindqvist became a professor of sinology in 1989 until she retired in 1997. In 2003 she was a visiting professor at the Beijing Language and Culture University ( Beijing Language and Culture University BLCU; Chinese 北京语言大学 , pinyin Běijīng yǔyán Daxue ) appointed.
