Radical 131 , meaning " servant , minister ", is one of 29 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with six strokes. In Kanji , the Japanese spelling, the character is written in a different stroke sequence with seven lines.

With 4 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical "servant" does only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 131. position. In modern abbreviation dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 164th position.

The character evolved from the image of a bowing servant seen from above.

In dynastic China, 臣 also served as a polite form of self-humiliation, meaning “I”. As a component, 臣 is part of numerous characters. Since it was shortened, the cumbersome component, which has to be written off and on again, no longer appears so often. 卧 (where = go to sleep) contains the radical 臣 and, on the right, people (人) in a slightly varied version. Its original meaning was "to lie down to rest". 宦 (= eunuch ) consists of the official 臣 under the roof 宀 of the palace. In 臧 (= good) there are 戕 as sound carriers and 臣. 臧 as a whole, in turn, functions as a sound carrier in = (= memory). The grass head (艹) carries meaning. The characters 姬 (in: 宦 姬 = Madame), 颐 (= cheek), 熙 (= light) u. a. do not contain the component 臣, but another one that looks very similar to it. This combination used to stand for cheek (today: 颐, with the head 页 on the right).
