Radical 99 , meaning “ sweet ”, is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese script that are written with five strokes.

With 3 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon. Modern reference works such as the Xiandai Hanyu Cidian and the Xinhua dictionary do not list 甘 as a radical. There it is under his first line to look up the 一 horizontal line.

The radical "sweet" takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the 99th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 135th position.

The name of the western Chinese province of Gansu (Gānsù 甘肃 or 甘肅) has nothing to do with the meaning of "sweet". Rather, it is composed of the initial syllables of the cities of Gan zhou ( Zhangye ) and Su zhou ( Jiuquan ).
