Zhangye ( Chinese  张掖 市 , Pinyin Zhāngyè Shì ) is a district-free city in the northwest of the Chinese province of Gansu . Your administrative area forms the center piece of the Hexi corridor . It has an area of ​​40,874 km² and around 1.264 million inhabitants (2013), 353,000 of them in the city and 911,000 in the rural area. It borders the cities of Wuwei and Jinchang to the east, Jiuquan and Jiayuguan to the west, Qinghai Province to the south, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north .

In Zhangye there is the temple of the Great Buddha (Dafo Si) with the largest reclining Buddha statue in China.

Administrative structure

Zhangye is composed of a municipality, four counties and an autonomous county. These are:

  • Ganzhou district (甘州区), 4,240 km², 500,000 inhabitants (2004), center, seat of the city government;
  • Minle District (民乐 县), 3,687 km², 240,000 inhabitants (2004), capital: Hongshui Municipality (洪水 镇);
  • District of Linze (临泽 县), 2,777 km², 150,000 inhabitants (2004), main town: large community Shahe (沙河 镇);
  • Gaotai county (高 台 县), 4,312 km², 160,000 inhabitants (2004), capital: Chengguan municipality (城关 镇);
  • Circle Shandan (山丹县), km² 5402, 190,000 inhabitants (2004), capital: greater community Qingquan (清泉镇);
  • Sunan Autonomous County of the Yugur (肃南 裕固族 自治县), 20,456 km², 40,000 inhabitants (2004), capital: Hongwansi Municipality (红 湾 寺镇).
