Radical 208 , meaning " mouse , rat ", is one of four traditional radicals in the Chinese writing with thirteen lines.
With 7 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it is very rare. In the Kangxi dictionary there are still 92 characters under this radical.
The spelling variant 鼡, made up of just eight lines, barely reveals the relationship to the original character; it is not used for character combinations.
The symbol arose from the pictogram of a mouse. Accordingly, characters with the radical 鼠 are related to mouse or mouse-like animals such as:
- 鼬 (= weasel).
In Chinese astrology, the zodiac signs give their own name every 12th year. In the legend, Buddha called all animals to a festival. The rat told the cat that this festival would be celebrated a day later. She herself rode to the festival on the back of the buffalo and was the first to reach it. Buddha rewarded all animals by naming a year after them. Rat , buffalo , tiger , rabbit , dragon , snake , horse , sheep , monkey , rooster , dog and pig . The cat but since then followed the rat to take revenge.
The mouse (or rat) is considered aggressive according to the Chinese calendar . Mouse years (子 zǐ ) are:
