The symbol for wheat shows a shaggy plant. On the oracle bones , the sign already took its shape. In 1958, a simplified form with just seven strokes was introduced. (Abbreviation: 麦).
The pictogram for wheat is made up of two parts: at the top it shows the full ears of wheat hanging down, and at the bottom there is the sign “ progress ”. It is the ripening wheat. The radical is also used for barley . With the sign “ shell ” one forms the “ bran ”. “ Wheat ” and “ autumn ” result in an expression that is used in the sense of “ school holidays ”. During the harvest season in autumn, schools in rural areas are closed because students have to help. In order to write the “ harvest ” one has to add “ absorb ” to the radical .
The original meaning of 麦 (mai) is to come, which becomes clear in the components of the oracle bones and seal script form, which consist of 来 (lai) and the foot 止 (= 足 zu). 来 (lai = to come) originally looked like an ear of wheat and also meant wheat, barley. Today, however, the meaning is just the opposite: 麦 (mai = grain) and 来 (lai = to come). The signs ruled by 麦 (mai) are in the grain meaning field such as 麸 (fu = wheat bran). Overall, however, the radical 麦 (mai) is not subject to many signs, not even the flour: 面 (mian). However, this is a result of the shortening of Chinese characters. The flour was originally subject to the grain. In order to shorten this sign, the bearer of the meaning was sacrificed here and the bearer of the sound 面 (mian) was retained. Since 面 (mian) alone also means face, the same sign applies today to flour and side.
