The pictogram of this sign shows the scaly body of a fish. Fins and the head were added later. The four points stylize the tail. In compound signs, 鱼 usually functions as a bearer of meaning for the field of meaning fish as in:

Lu 鲁, the name of an ancient state, home of Confucius , in what is now Shandong Province, has the broader meaning of " stupid ". The symbol contains the fish 鱼, presumably because of the proximity of the state of Lu to the sea. The sun 日 below in the sign developed from a rectangular symbol that stood for a fish pond.
