With 7 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
This radical can easily be confused with radical 97瓜 (= melon).
The radical "claw" takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the 87th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 116th position.
The original shape shows the image of the claw foot of a wild animal. The hunters had to be able to distinguish the prints of such feet from each other, which is why the component 采 (bian) has the meaning differentiate. 悉 (= to be familiar in 熟悉 = to know well) contains 采 and the heart 心. 番 (fen = counting unit word for species) originally meant the foot of a wild animal, the field below (田) is none, but is intended to represent the footprint of this foot.
The 采 sub-characters are not very numerous, and many of them are rarely used. The designation of the radical, which is not a single sign, is therefore problematic. Its pronunciation is hardly known. 采 (bian) is very similar to the character 采 (take cai). So very similar that both are summarized under 采 (bian) in older reference works and also in the new Ciyuan .
