Radical 109 , meaning " eye ", is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with five strokes.
With 116 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The character developed from the pictorial representation of a human eye. Initially drawn from the front, the pupil in the middle, the eye was later turned sideways and with the use of the writing brush the characters became more angular and thus lost their clarity. Most of the time, the radical functions as a bearer of meaning in the compound sign and then places it in the context of seeing and eye, for example in 眉 (= eyebrow), 眶 (= eye socket), 睁 (= open eyes), 盲 (= blind), 睹(= see, perceive), 眯 (= blink) and 瞪 (= stare). The components 目 (= eye) and 木 (= tree) are found in 相 (= appearance). This goes back to a sentence in the Book of Changes : "On earth we mainly see trees". The eye (目) and tree (木) came together to form the combined sign 相 (xiang), which originally meant seeing.
