Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary

The Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary was compiled in 1932 by the Presbyterian Robert Henry Mathews for the China Mission. It has been published repeatedly since then and used to be an indispensable aid in Sinology . ( ISBN 0674123506 ). It is still suitable for the layman and the occasional user, but it is no longer suitable for scientific work. The main problem with the dictionary is the lack of separation between modern and classical meanings. In addition, the specified pronunciation, especially that of the tones, often does not correspond to today's standard.

The 15,000 entries are given in Chinese characters, in a modified version of the Wade-Giles transcription and in Bopomofo .
