Radical 153 , meaning "cat" (or "little hairy animal") is one of 20 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese script that are written with seven strokes.

With 16 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical "cat" only occupies the 153rd position in the long-character list of traditional radicals, which consists of 214 radicals. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 198th position.

The seal script form of this character shows a head and a body and should represent a long, wild animal. Therefore the component can be found as a bearer of meaning in 豹 (bao = panther, leopard), 貂 (diao = sable), 貉 (= marten). Later 豸 became a generic term in the phrase 虫 豸 (= vermin, insects and worms). 貌 (in: 容貌 rongmao = face) contains the reduced 豹 (bao) as a sound carrier, not 豸. The remaining 豸 is not a meaning here, but a sound carrier. The right component 貌 (mao = appearance, appearance) also occurs as a seal sign and shows a person, but emphasizes his face.
