The Radical 18 meaning " knife , sword " is one of 23 traditional radicals of Chinese characters that are written with two strokes. With 90 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it has a high frequency.

The radical diameter increases only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 18th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is 17th and 27th.

The short form of the radical, 刂, is always on the right; the sign is similar to the katakana sign "ri". The other variant 刁 is rare.

Most of the characters found under the radical 刀 have to do with knives or blades, such as:

character Explanation
Cutting edge
to cut
Admission ticket

In the case of an admission ticket, the connection only becomes clear when you hold an admission ticket in front of your eyes: It consists of two sections that are cut apart for validation. The variant in the upper part of the symbol 负 (= to carry something on your back), which is also described as a diagonal knife (撇 刀头) because of its similarity to 刀, although the component is often a modified form of the human being 人, is also considered a knife ( Radical 9 ) is. Sometimes the “oblique knife” also stands for radical 87 , the claw 爪, as in the abbreviation 争 (= fight). Some of today's "oblique knives" are also derived from the shape of the head of animals, such as:

象 (= elephant),
兔 (= rabbit) and
龟 (= turtle, shortened, actually: 龜).

Often, however, they are neither knives, nor claws nor people, but only general components of shortened characters such as 刍 (= hay).

In addition, the character 刀 in 叨 (= babble) and in 召 (= call) has the function of a sound carrier.
