Atmospheric chemistry

Chemical and transport processes in the atmosphere

The atmospheric chemistry is an area of atmospheric research. It deals with the composition and chemical conversion of the earth's atmosphere . It makes important contributions to understanding air pollution ( e.g. smog ) and the earth's climate .

When science was shaped by the looming air pollution from the 1940s onwards, atmospheric chemistry until the 1980s focused on reactions within the gas phase and especially photochemical processes. Phenomena such as the summer smog over Los Angeles and the London winter smog in 1952, but also the problem of the growing ozone hole over the Antarctic, determined the scientific agenda.

The influence of liquid and solid components, i.e. the chemistry of hydrometeors and aerosols , then moved more into the focus and justified the topic of modern multi-phase chemistry, which aims to understand the diverse interactions of the different atmospheric components .
