meaning

In contrast to other scientific disciplines, chemistry uses the term technicus “general chemistry” (there is no “general physics”). This emphasizes the existence and importance of basic chemical knowledge for the understanding of all chemistry. Without a minimum understanding of the structure of atoms, the properties of the various chemical bonds in molecules, the basic behavior of acids and bases and the various concepts of oxidation and reduction, one cannot familiarize oneself with the specialty areas of chemistry. In this respect, general chemistry is at the beginning of every closer study of chemistry.
