The seal form of this character consists of the image of a running person who uses both arms to help. Below is a foot as an aid to interpreting the upper component.
The radical places its signs in the context of the meaning of walking, running: 赶 (gan = catch up), 趋 (hurry, hurry), 趔 趄 (stagger, stagger), 赴 (fu = walk), 趟 (tang = unit of measure for movements). In 陡 (= sloping) the radical 走 appears as a sound carrier. 徒 (tu = walking) originally consisted of the foot 辶 and the earth 土 (tu) as a sound carrier. As a half frame in the lower left position in the sign, the last, lower line is to be extended from 走 to the right as in 起 (qi = stand up) or 赳 (= brave).
Spelling variant of the radical: 赱
