It rarely occurs with 5 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary . In the Kangxi dictionary there are still 46 characters under this radical.

The original pictogram of this sign shows a hand hitting a piece of wood on a clay vessel that was filled with bran and covered with animal skin. Drum towers at the Chinese temples were used to mark the beginning and the end of work, while the bell towers heralded prayers.
