use
竹 can act as a sound carrier in the sign like in the family name 竺 (zhu), 筑 (zhu = an old musical instrument) or 笃 (duk = serious).
Usually, however, 竹 is a bearer of meaning and places its symbols in the meaning field of bamboo: 竿 (gun = rod), 筐 (kuang = basket made of bamboo), 笛 (di = flute), 管 (guan = tube), 筷子 (kuàizi = chopsticks) , 箸 (jyu = chopsticks). 简 (jian simple, uncomplicated) originally meant a writing board made from bamboo. 笨 (ben = stupid) was originally a name for the white inside a bamboo tube, 等 (deng = degree, rank) meant the bamboo tablets 竹简 (jian = to order). The 竹 字 头 (zhuzitou = bamboo head) carries meaning everywhere. 籍 (ji = book, work) and 薄 (bo = thin) wear the bamboo head because the historical Chinese liked to use the bamboo as a carrier for their characters. Here, too, 竹 is the bearer of meaning. This plant played a role as an aid in arithmetic, so that it also occurs in 算 (suan = to calculate). The bamboo has nothing to do with the process 篡 (= usurp, usurp). Rather, the sign consists of the component ㄙ (= 私 si = private, personal) and 算 as a sound carrier.
Character connections are only created with the variant ⺮ (always above).
