history

Individual finds indicate a settlement during the Neolithic period. Berikon is documented several times around the middle of the 12th century as Percheim / Bercheim . The place name probably comes from the Old High German bërg-heim and describes the place as an elevated dwelling. In the course of time it changed via Berchein and Berkein to Berken, documented in the 14th century, and finally appears in 1675 as Berekhen .

In the Middle Ages, the village served as a court of justice for the Habsburgs in the Freiamt Affoltern , the gallows stood in the Mattenhof area. In the 14th century Berikon was a fiefdom of the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg , who passed it on to the Lords of Schönenwerd near Dietikon . In 1374 the city of Bremgarten acquired the lower jurisdiction and set up a subordinate bailiwick that lasted until 1798.

When Aargau was conquered by the Confederates in 1415, Berikon came under the rule of the city of Zurich and was then divided in 1471. Oberberikon came to the basement office , while Unterberikon was assigned to the office Rohrdorf of the county of Baden . In March 1798, the French invaded Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Both communities came to the short-lived canton of Baden . When the canton of Aargau was founded in 1803, the resident communities were reunited, but the separation into two local communities lasted until 1906.

On May 1, 1902, after the opening of the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn , Berikon was connected to the railway network with a stop on the Mutschellen. Until the end of the 1950s, Berikon remained a modest farming village with only a slight increase in population. But then, helped by the proximity to Zurich, an unprecedented construction boom set in. Between 1960 and today, the population quadrupled. Berikon grew together with the neighboring communities and is now part of the agglomeration of Zurich.

Attractions

St. Mauritius Church

A chapel dedicated to Saint Mauritius had existed since at least 1420. Until 1860, Berikon belonged to the parish of Oberwil. South of the old chapel, the parish church of St. Mauritius was built from 1856 according to plans by Joseph Caspar Jeuch . The inauguration of this hall church in neo-Gothic style took place in 1862. Because of the danger of collapse, the bell tower had to be completely renovated in 1903/04, at the same time the nave was lengthened and the choir and sacristy were rebuilt . A geology trail can be found in the Gunzenbühl area.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "White-stemmed green clover leaf." This coat of arms first appeared on the official municipal seal in 1811. According to a report from 1872, the clover leaf should refer to three courtyards that merged and thus laid the foundation for today's municipality.
