Eggenwil ( Swiss German : ˌɛgəˈʋiːl ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Bremgarten district and is located in the Reuss Valley immediately north of the district capital.

geography

The village lies between the east bank of the Reuss and the evenly sloping, partly terraced western slope of the Heitersberg hill range. A ledge protrudes into the Reuss plain, on which the village center is located. The Reuss, which forms the western boundary of the municipality, meanders very strongly near Eggenwil, the Foort peninsula is bordered on three sides by the river. The farm settlements Hohfoor ( 485  m above sea level ), Ibisguet ( 465  m above sea level ) and Wissli ( 524  m above sea level ) are located on the slope above the village .

The area of the municipality is 246 hectares , of which 67 hectares are covered with forest and 41 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 555 meters above the Wissli farm, the lowest at 357 meters on the Reuss. Neighboring communities are Künten in the north, Bellikon in the northeast, Widen in the east, Bremgarten in the south and Fischbach-Göslikon in the west.

history

Egenwilare was first mentioned in a document in 1160 in the Acta Murensia . The place name comes from the Old High German Egininwilari and means "Hofsiedlung des Egino". In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the domain of the Habsburgs , who exercised high jurisdiction . They gave lower jurisdiction to the Hermetschwil monastery .

After the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates in 1415, Eggenwil came to the office of Hermetschwil (also known as Krummamt) in the free offices . However, the part of the village above the country road was assigned to the office of Rohrdorf in the county of Baden . In 1529 the residents converted to the Reformation , but had to return to the old denomination in 1531 after the defeat of the Reformed towns in the Second Kappel War . In March 1798, the French invaded Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . The reunified village together with Widen formed a municipality in the short-lived canton of Baden . After the canton of Aargau was founded in 1803, Widen was separated, and some farms came to Eggenwil when the border was cleared.

In the second half of the 19th century, viticulture was very important and the village became prosperous. The phylloxera epidemic ended the economic boom suddenly. As a result, many residents became impoverished and had to emigrate. The population fell by a third and could not be stabilized until the 1920s. In 1960 it reached the level of 1850 again. Since then it has more than doubled, as more and more people discovered the village as an attractive residential community on the edge of the agglomeration of the city of Zurich .

Attractions

Restaurant stars

The parish church of St. Laurentius has existed since at least the middle of the 12th century and is therefore one of the oldest in Aargau. In 1869 the cantonal government, which was then in possession of the Kollatur , prevented the construction of a new church and instead pushed through the construction of a new schoolhouse. For this reason, the church, which has survived to this day, was completely renovated in 1871/74. It is located in the lower part of the village and forms a closed group with the rectory and wash house. The polygonal choir dates from 1683, the church tower is of medieval origin.

The Sternen restaurant, located on the main road from Bremgarten to Baden, dominates the village scene. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century in a neoclassical style over an old wine cellar of the Muri monastery . After an eight-year hiatus, it reopened in September 2017. Since December 2017, the “Sternenstübli”, held in Venetian Baroque style, has been used as a wedding venue by the Bremgarten registry office.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red a tinned and black grooved white wall that extends to the base of the shield, topped by a six-pointed yellow star." It was not until 1942 that the community assembly introduced the coat of arms. The wall refers to the Muri monastery. Since the yellow star was subsequently drawn inconsistently, the municipal council set the number of rays to six in 1993.

population

The population developed as follows:

year 1850 1900 1930 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010

Eggenwil belongs to the Friedensrichterkreis VII (Bremgarten).
