Rudolfstetten-Friedlisberg ( Swiss German : Ruedistette-Fridlischberg, ˈruədiˌʃtɛtːə-ˈfridlɪʃˌpɛrɡ ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Bremgarten district and is located immediately east of the Mutschellen on the border with the canton of Zurich . Until 1953 the community was officially called Rudolfstetten .

geography

The community consists of two districts: Rudolfstetten is located in a valley that extends from Mutschellen in a north-easterly direction. It is traversed by the Rummelbach, which flows into the Reppisch about 200 meters after the municipal boundary . In the northwest the valley is bounded by the Hasenberg ( 762  m above sea level ), the southernmost branch of the Heitersberg chain. Due to the topography, the development extends over two kilometers and has merged with those of the neighboring communities of Berikon and Widen on the Mutschellen Pass . Towards the southeast, the terrain rises to the plateau of the Holzbirrliberg , around 100 to 150 meters above the valley. The Friedlisberg district ( 601  m above sea level ) is located on the plateau that is drained by the Chilebach .

The area of the municipality is 490 hectares , of which 136 hectares are covered with forest and 118 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 660  m above sea level. M. on the southern slope of the Hasenberg, the deepest at 448  m above sea level. M. am Rummelbach. Neighboring communities are Bergdietikon in the north, Urdorf in the east, Birmensdorf in the southeast, Berikon in the south and Widen in the west.

history

People first settled in this area around 2800 years ago. During excavations, vaulted ovens, charcoal piles and lawn iron ore came to light, which suggests that charcoal was produced here . Rudolfstetin was first mentioned in a document in 1190 , when Engelberg Monastery received the village as a gift. The place name comes from the Old High German (ze) Hruodolfesstetin , which means "at the homes of Hruodolf". Other known landowners in the Middle Ages were the noble family Rothenburg and the monasteries of St. Gallen , Gnadenthal , Wettingen and Sankt Blasien . The high level of jurisdiction was in the hands of the Habsburgs . Friedelisperg was first mentioned in 1321; this place name comes from the Old High German Fridulinesberg and means "mountain settlement of Fridulin".

In 1415 the Swiss conquered Aargau and Rudolfstetten now belonged to the Dietikon office in the county of Baden , a common rule . The city of Bremgarten built a road over the Mutschellen and a bridge over the Reppisch and granted the villagers duty-free . In 1438 Bremgarten took over the lower jurisdiction and made Rudolfstetten a bailiwick , to which Friedlisberg also belonged. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Rudolfstetten became a municipality in the Bremgarten district of the short-lived canton of Baden ; since 1803 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

In 1868 the village of Friedlisberg burned down with the exception of the school house. The village teacher, who was the only one insured, set the fire. Rudolfstetten was connected to the railway network on May 1, 1902 with the opening of the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn , from 1911 onwards there was electricity. The community was dominated by agriculture until well into the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 it went through a stormy development: the population increased sixfold and Rudolfstetten became part of the agglomeration of the city of Zurich. On January 1, 1967, the complete merger of Rudolfstetten and Friedlisberg took place. Both villages were previously considered a single police community, but administration, taxation and community assemblies were separate.

Attractions

The St. Jacob's Chapel in Rudolfstetten, which had existed since at least 1620 and was rebuilt in 1710 and extended in 1820, had to give way to the expansion of the main road in 1960. As a replacement, the modern Christ the King Church was built by the architect Hermann Baur by 1964 . The Friedlisberg chapel dates back to 1370. A new building was built in 1934 according to plans by Adolf Gaudy . The oldest surviving building in the community is the mill in the lower village, built in 1639. The Zehntenhaus from 1795/96 was initially the residence of the Untervogt and then served as a residential building for decades. The municipality bought it in 1973, and the municipal administration moved there four years later.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Split from red with black clad yellow nimbly monk with red book and black pilgrim staff and from yellow with a soaring red lion, holding red oar in front paws." The coat of arms goes back to a legend according to which Rudolf I von Habsburg is said to have lent a priest his horse near Rudolfstetten so that he could cross the high Reppisch (the red lion is the heraldic animal of the Habsburgs). The coat of arms has existed in various forms since the 19th century; the variant used today was introduced in 1966.
