The canton school Baden , also called "Kanti Baden", is an Aargau canton school on the outskirts of Baden . It offers three educational courses: grammar school , business school and computer science school . The school is housed in ten modern buildings, the first five by the architect Fritz Haller . 1259 students are taught by 212 teachers (as of March 2019).

It was the first Swiss school to be awarded the MINT- friendly school quality mark in 2013 , followed by a renewed award in 2016 and 2019. The German Association for the Promotion of Mathematics and Science Education found the teaching staff and the infrastructure, the scientific support programs for the gifted and the teaching content the Kanti Baden as particularly suitable.

Kanti Baden has two partner schools: the Collège de Gambach in Friborg and the Shanghai I&C Foreign Languages School. The Chagall project has been running since December 2017 with the participation of the Baden, Wettingen and Spreitenbach district and secondary schools as well as the Baden vocational school . It accompanies young people from financially modest backgrounds or with a migrant background in the transition from lower secondary level to secondary schools or to an apprenticeship with a vocational diploma.

Training and instruction

Principles

At Kanti Baden, teaching is carried out according to cantonal curricula. Scientific thinking and working is conveyed in the same way as independent judgment. The school leads to a differentiated examination of art and literature as well as to an intensive occupation with sport and music. The compulsory languages are German , French and English . BYOD - bring your own device - has been in place since 2014 . The students have a personal laptop and use it to obtain, present and process information. The students and teachers use various e-learning programs for teaching. Depending on the training course, social services, an internship or a language stay are also part of the training. School trips and project weeks complete the offer.

Immersion classes, language certificates, exchange year

At the Baden Cantonal School there is at least one department per year that is taught immersively . This means that lessons are held in several subjects ( mathematics , physics , chemistry , biology , economics and law , computer science and history ) in the foreign language English. This promotes the use of the foreign language, as communication is only carried out in this language during lessons. The immersive lessons are aimed at particularly capable students. When you graduate from high school, you will receive a note on the bilingual Matura in your school-leaving certificate. There is also the possibility of attending courses at the cantonal school that serve as preparation for the exams of language certificates. You can prepare for the First and Advanced Certificate exams in English and for the DELF-DALF program exams in French. Schoolchildren can also complete an exchange semester or an exchange year abroad. The school also regularly accepts exchange students from all over the world.

NAWIMAT and SMART

With NAWIMAT (natural sciences and mathematics), the Baden Cantonal School has a special offer in the context of the mathematics subject. The aim of NAWIMAT is to introduce the principles and working methods of the natural sciences in a practical way. During the first two years of school, students attend two science internship lessons a week. The participating subjects biology, chemistry, geography and physics make it possible to deal with topics from all areas of nature and to provide insight into different approaches in scientific research. SMART (Students Motivated Achieve Real Targets) is the talent development program of Kanti Baden. SMART is open to motivated students whose interests go beyond what the school offers.

Free subjects

In addition to the languages Italian , Spanish , Latin , Ancient Greek , Russian , Arabic , Chinese and Hebrew , the following optional subjects are offered:

  • Robotics, web design
  • Literary writing, artistic creation (addition), photography
  • Music, choir, big band, orchestra
  • Mathematics (additional), natural sciences
  • Philosophy, religion, politics
  • Sports

Whereabouts

Media library

The media library is a research center with 25,000 books, 3,500 films, 1,000 CDs, access to 10 databases via Digithek, 18,000 e-books and 70 magazines. It offers 100 workstations and access to WLAN , two black boxes with a projector and a quiet work area. The media library runs courses to improve information literacy. She is a member of the German-Swiss Middle School Libraries Working Group . From the estate of the district doctor Ernst Kappeler (1900–1969), the media library received a library with classics of world literature and a collection of autographs by Hermann Hesse in 1999 .

Hallerturnhalle (aquarium), fitness and dance room

The gym in Haller design is a large cuboid with a glass front on two sides. Because of this architectural feature, this gym is often called an aquarium. During the lessons normal physical education is carried out in this hall, outside of the lessons it is rented by many clubs. When renovating the basement, the school set up a larger fitness room with new training equipment. Here students can train for a fee. The fitness room is also used for physical education . The dance room with a large mirrored wall is located on the upper floor.

Relaxation room, cafeteria and foyer

Since the renovation, there has been a relaxation room on the third floor of the Hallerbaus (building 1) . The windows and the entrance to the relaxation room are covered with black curtains. The eight lying areas are also provided with built-in reading lamps. The Scolarest canteen at the Baden Cantonal School is operated by the Compass Group (Switzerland). In order to offer a healthy and varied diet, she works closely with the Swiss Society for Nutrition , for example on menu development and on the monthly review of menu plans. The so-called Kanti Foyer has existed at Kanti Baden since the 1970s. In the house at Schönaustrasse 21, the canton students have various rooms, including a kitchen, as well as pastoral care. The foyer is financed by the Roman Catholic Church of the Canton of Aargau .

Special occasions

Before the spring break, a public theater performance or musical takes place at the Kanti. Teachers with many years of theater experience are responsible for the direction and set design, costumes and light and music. The Tonschiene offers varied concerts every month and a good insight into the diverse musical repertoire of the students. The annual Kantiball is also a popular occasion. The first Swiss football championships for vocational and secondary schools took place at the Baden Cantonal School in 2010. Also in 2011 some teachers of the sports department organized this tournament, but only with middle school teams. The event has been held annually since then.

technology

The buildings are connected to a modern fiber optic network, over which both the IT network and the building control run. Since the renovation, the school has an air-conditioned, UPS- protected server room. The extension of the NAWI wing also allowed the installation of eight modern chapels , thanks to which sophisticated chemical syntheses can be carried out in chemistry. A photovoltaic system was inaugurated on the roof of building 6 on November 20, 2010. The 301 solar panels with an area of 490 square meters have an output of 69KWp.

Art at the Kanti Baden

Youngsters (1969): The bronze group entitled “Youngsters” on the stone square in front of the main building was made by Franz Fischer from Zurich. It was created in 1969 with the intention of creating something moving and dynamic for the location that sets a counterpoint to the strict architecture. Fischer wrote: "The forward-striving, moving should express the symbol of youth in the rhythmic forms of the bronze group and thus the artistic complement to the self-contained and closed structure." The sculpture by Franz Fischer was a gift to the canton of Aargau from the “Action Committee for a Cantonal School in Baden”.

Sprüche (1979): In the interior of the extension buildings, various artists (including Laura Weidacher, Hans Anliker, Rudolf Mumprecht, Peter Erni) creatively implemented sentences and sayings selected by the students. For example: «EXIT», Peter Erni, galvanized steel frame with Eternit filling on a plate pedestal, anchored hammer, Dada quote from a schoolboy (Felix Thommen).
Perspektiva Elmex Ultra
Bubble Gum Rum Punsch-o-Fix
Helter Skelter Alabama
Knorro Pan Alpha Batrix.

Exacte Landschaft (1979/1981): As part of a cantonal competition, a team of artists created the "Exacte Landschaft" in 1981, a 24x16 meter work of art made of ceramic and concrete. In 2012, the «Exacte Landschaft» was demolished in order to be able to build a temporary arrangement with additional classrooms.

Wall painting with lightbulbs (2005–2006): In the course of adding floors to the building for the natural sciences, another art in architecture project was realized. "Before a flash of inspiration, there is darkness in the brain (a portrait)" by Julia & Claudia Müller shows Albert Einstein's high school diploma greatly enlarged. In front of it hangs an oversized lightbulb that lights up irregularly like a flash of inspiration.

The Baden Cantonal School also has a collection of prints. Fritz Schaufelberger bought the first works in connection with the founding of the school. As part of the expansion in 1979 and the renovation of the school in 2005–2007, the collection was supplemented with new purchases. For example «Black Suns», 2011, 2-color lithograph by Roman Signer. “The care with which we (Kanti Baden) maintain and present art is also reflected in the students' respect for the works. There are hardly any cases of damage worth mentioning, although over 100 works are attached to the school. "

History and architecture

Highlights and major projects in the history of Kanti Baden were the anniversary year of the school's 50th anniversary in 2011 as well as the renovation of the building and an increase in the classroom between 2005 and 2007. The most significant changes are reflected in the history of architecture.

Foundation (1961)

The Baden Cantonal School was founded on May 1st, 1961. Numerous people had campaigned for this work over generations. Mention should be made of the work of the Action Committee and the Grand Council . The former provided financial resources for the realization of the project. The latter made public demands a state task. Six months after it was founded, the Baden Cantonal School was able to open at a temporary location. The cantonal school was initially housed in the Klösterli building in what is now the Baden City Library at Mellingerstrasse 19. There were five classrooms and the necessary ancillary rooms - the rector's office, secretariat, teachers' room and work room for the students - available. Biology and physical education classes took place in the Tanneggschulhaus and music lessons in the district school . The physics and chemistry classes could be held a year later in the trade school in Baden. If the new cantonal school buildings had not been ready for occupancy by the beginning of the school year 1963/64, the lessons would have suffered from a lack of space due to the increasing number of students.

Haller buildings (1964)

The first five buildings, which were designed and constructed after a competition by Alfons Barth, Hans Zaugg and Fritz Haller , were based on the architecture of the time and were included in the "Inventory of buildings worthy of protection in the city of Baden ". Four years after the school was founded, the building was occupied in 1964. Fritz Haller and his brother laid a grid of 2 x 2 meters over the entire area. The first five buildings ( classrooms , gymnasium , auditorium , administration , but also access and lounge areas) followed this pattern. The construction of the buildings made it possible to prefabricate them from individual parts. This continued down to the details and could be expanded as required. This gives the viewer the impression that the whole is made up of individual parts. Thanks to the wide staircases and the spacious lounges, the buildings are characterized above all by their brightness and space. Below you can see the buildings of the Baden Cantonal School designed by Fritz Haller. The numbering used today is in brackets.

Extension (1978)

In 1978 the facility had to be expanded due to the increasing number of students. For financial reasons, a new planning team was used this time, which did not fall back on Haller's sophisticated and architecturally valuable foundations. Three more buildings were developed on a grid of 2.50 meters, which in future served as standard school buildings in the canton of Aargau (for example in Zofingen and Brugg ). In 1978 the triple gymnasium, the NAWI wing (building 7) and the three-story class wing were completed. Some of the buildings have very glaring defects, such as the completely forgotten toilets on the upper floors of building 6 or the stairs that are too narrow in the same building.

Renovation (2005-2007)

The spray asbestos that was widely used in the 1960s to protect the steel girders from overheating in the event of a fire made renovation of the Hall buildings impossible for a long time. The renovation work had to be preceded by professional removal of the asbestos. During the asbestos removal, teaching could not be held in the Hallerbauten. In order to be able to dispense with temporary arrangements during the asbestos removal and renovation phase, it was decided to increase and modernize the natural science wing. As a result, urgently needed additional classroom could be obtained at relatively no cost.

State-of-the-art technology moved into the Hallerbauten. For example, the buildings could be converted to minergy standards and connected to the internet. Despite the modernization, care was taken to ensure that Hall's typical style could be retained. The only 64 square meter classroom, too small for today's classes with 26 students, was refurnished, the previous furniture was donated to the Magyar Örökség-díjjal Kitüntetett Lónyay Utcai Reformátur grammar school in Budapest . Every room could now be equipped with a projector , DVD player and extensive wireless LAN .

Temporary school buildings (2012-2013)

Since the number of pupils in the entire canton has increased more than expected, the Kanti Baden was expanded to include a two-story pavilion with 12 classrooms for foreign language lessons for the 2012/2013 school year - but only as a temporary measure for a maximum of eight years. Around a year later, a temporary gym was added, which was soon fully used in the evenings.
