The canton school Wohlen , also called Kanti Wohlen , is a public short-term high school ( canton school ) in the canton of Aargau in Wohlen . It has around 570 students and 90 teachers. This high school , which has existed since 1976, is a UNESCO associated school .
History and architecture
In 1966 a teachers' seminar started operations in Wohlen . It was initially a branch of the seminar in Wettingen , which trained primary school teachers and was organizationally independent from 1969. Between 1965 and 1969 five pavilions and two gyms were built along the Bünz . In 1976 a new school law stipulated that primary school teachers had to have a completed Matura . The canton authorities therefore upgraded the Wohlen seminar to a canton school. In 1980 the conversion process was completed.
Although this had fulfilled a decades-old political demand, most secondary school students from the Freiamt had to continue to attend schools outside the region due to insufficient capacity. For this reason, a several times larger extension was built north of the pavilion between 1984 and 1988, which took on the function of a main building. The architectural office Burkard, Meyer, Steiger and Partner from Baden was responsible for the planning, which prevailed against 40 competitors in an architectural competition.
The extension of the canton school in Wohlen is an outstanding example of contemporary architecture. The roof structures over the entrance, in the central area, in the media library and in the auditorium are among the earliest works of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava .
At the end of July 2017, Franz Widmer retired after 18 years as rector of the Wohlen Cantonal School. His successor and current rector is Matthias Angst.
classes
For the first two years of high school an accent tray is selected for the third and fourth year, a major subject and for the fourth year, a complementary subject . The canton school in Wohlen has been offering immersion lessons in French since 1999 and has thus assumed a pioneering role in Aargau. Since 2009, bilingual classes have also been offered in English .
Culture
The Kantonsschule Wohlen is the seat of the Kanti forum. This private law association with over 800 members organizes cultural events in the auditorium that are aimed at an audience with high demands. The events range from theater performances, concerts, dance happenings to cabaret.
Former
Well-known alumni of the canton school Wohlen are the former Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard , the television presenter Susanne Wille and the national councilor Cédric Wermuth .
