Rolf Brem

Rolf Brem (born February 12, 1926 in Lucerne ; † April 11, 2014 there ) was a Swiss sculptor , draftsman and graphic artist. He lived and worked in Meggen on Lake Lucerne .

Life

Rolf Brem came from a family of craftsmen and grew up in Lucerne. After six years of high school, he attended the sculpture class at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts from 1945 to 1948 and worked, with interruptions, between 1948 and 1957 in the studio of the Zurich sculptor Karl Geiser , who said he had a strong influence on him, and in his own workshop in Lucerne. After attending the Paris Académie de la Grande Chaumière from 1951 to 1953, he stayed at the Istituto Svizzero in Rome in 1954 and 1955 together with his wife Françoise .

After Geiser's death in 1957, Brem set up his own studio in the orangery next to the Villa St. Charles-Hall in Meggen. He opened a second studio in 1972 in Morbio Superiore in the canton of Ticino . He found his final resting place in the Friedental cemetery .

Works

Brake figurative representations of people and animals can be found in numerous cities in Switzerland. His sculptures are mainly installed in public spaces.

There are 13 brake sculptures in Lucerne, including the figure group “Shepherd with Sheep” from 1985 in front of the Lucerne City Theater . There are 14 of his sculptures in his long-term home in Meggen. Further works can be found throughout Switzerland, for example in Bad Ragaz , Brig , Geneva and Magliaso . A collection of his portrait heads can be seen in Meggen's parish hall. In 1992 Brem was represented at the world exhibition in Seville with 136 portrait heads, which Harald Szeemann composed for an installation. All of Brem's portrait heads were exhibited in the KKLB in Beromünster in 2018 .

The central Switzerland on Sunday wrote to his death: "No other artist in central Switzerland enjoyed such great popularity and reputation even outside the art world."
