Morbio Superiore was a municipality in the Caneggio district in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The historic town center is on a gently sloping slope, about 450  m above sea level. M. It consists of old Ticino town houses, courtyards and a few villas as well as the two churches of San Giovanni and Chiesa Sant'Anna . The latter is known for its frescoes from the late Baroque period . There are several vineyards in the area. A new district has recently been built on the road to Muggio. There is a kindergarten and a library in the village. The children have to go to school in the neighboring village of Morbio Inferiore , and the nearest grocery store is also there.

In the area of ​​Morbio Superiore there is a geological excavation site with fossil finds and exposed strata, which is also accessible to visitors.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1116 under the then name Morbio de Supra , a municipality that originally belonged to Balerna . In 1591 she formed a sub- parish with Sagno ; this village separated from it in 1802.

Fusion in the valley of the Breggia

On April 20, 2008, the merger of the municipalities of Bruzella , Cabbio , Caneggio , Morbio Superiore, Muggio and Sagno to form the municipality of Breggia was announced. The municipality of Muggio rejected this merger. However, it was ordered by the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino, which is why Muggio filed a complaint with the federal court. After the defeat before the federal court, the merger took place on October 25, 2009.
