Sagno was a municipality in the Caneggio district, in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The former municipality of Sagno borders on Italy . The village church is dedicated to Michael (Archangel) and was built in the 18th century by the architect Simone Cantoni on Romanesque foundation walls. Neighboring municipalities are Vacallo and Morbio Inferiore .

history

The village was first mentioned in the years 1296–1299. His then name was Sagnio . 108 objects from the Bronze Age were found here in 1609. Sagno used to belong to the civil jurisdiction of Balerna while maintaining its communal independence.

Fusion in the valley of the Breggia

The merger of the municipalities of Bruzella , Cabbio, Caneggio , Morbio Superiore , Muggio and Sagno to form the municipality of Breggia TI was announced for April 20, 2008 . The municipality of Muggio rejected this merger. However, it was decreed by the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino, which is why Muggio filed a complaint with the federal court. After Muggio's defeat in federal court, the merger took place on October 25, 2009.
