Sorengo is a municipality in the district of Vezia , district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland and consists of the districts of Cortivallo and Cremignone .

geography

Sorengo is located on a hill between Lake Lugano and the small lake of Muzzano, which the municipality borders. Neighboring municipalities are the city of Lugano in the north and east , Collina d'Oro in the south and Muzzano in the west .

history

The place has been attested as a community since 1298; until the 18th century, the district of Cortivallo retained a certain degree of independence. Ecclesiastically, the place first belonged to Lugano before its own parish was established here. A Capuchin monastery existed from 1565 to 1653 , which was then moved to Lugano.

The Sant'Anna Clinic has existed since 1934 and the American private university Franklin College Switzerland has been based in the municipality since 1986 .

The former rural village increasingly became a residential community in the greater Lugano area from the 1950s, which was reflected in the sharp increase in the number of residents.
