Vezia is a municipality in the Vezia district in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The community is 370 m above sea level. M. on the left bank of the Vedeggio river. Neighboring communities are Manno , Cadempino , Bioggio , Lugano , Savosa , Porza and Cureglia .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1473 under the then name Vescia and then Vezo 1496. Property ownership of the cathedral chapter of Como is attested in 1297 and of the Santa Maria Hospital in Lugano in 1392. Probably at the beginning of the 17th century, Vezia received the privileged status of a separate community (terra separata) of the Lugano Bailiwick, probably thanks to the Morosini family, who owned extensive lands there. Ecclesiastically, Vezia first belonged to Lugano, from 1571 to Comano and in 1653 became an independent parish.

economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry with a regionally important cattle market dominated Vezia's economic life for a long time. In the second half of the 20th century, the settlement of various industrial and commercial enterprises in the southern part of the municipality was followed by rapid population growth.
