Bioggio is a municipality in the Agno district , in the Malcantone region in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .
geography
Bioggio is located in the south of the Malcantone and in the plain of the river Vedeggio , 2 kilometers southwest of Lugano , to whose agglomeration the municipality exists. Bioggio consists of the villages Bioggio, Bosco Luganese , Cimo and Iseo and numerous small hamlets.
Neighboring communities are Agno , Vernate , Curio , Aranno , Cademario , Gravesano , Manno , Massagno , Vezia , Lugano and Muzzano .
history
The first written mention of Bioggio dates from 1335 as Biegio . In 1992, during excavations, the remains of a Roman building from the 3rd century were discovered, which was probably used as a thermal bath. In the Middle Ages, noble families from Lugano and Como were wealthy in Bioggio. From 1960 an industrial zone was created east of Vedeggio, which today belongs to the Lugano agglomeration.
Community merger
On April 4, 2004, the old municipality of Bioggio was merged with the previously independent municipalities of Bosco Luganese and Cimo. The new large community took over the name Bioggio. On April 20, 2008, the municipality of Iseo was integrated into the municipality of Bioggio.

The main roads from Manno and Lugano to Ponte Tresa run through the municipality. The community is connected to the public transport network by two stops on the Lugano-Ponte-Tresa railway . Part of the airport Lugano-Agno is located in the municipality.

- Parish church of San Maurizio, mentioned in 1261, was demolished after the construction of the current parish church, built by the architect Gerolamo Grossi and consecrated on July 7th, 1791
