Vernate is a municipality in the Agno district, Lugano district in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village is located on a terrace of the Santa Maria hill in the lower Malcantone ; it has around 550 inhabitants.

history

In Vernate, two graves from Roman times were discovered that contained a jug and scissors as gifts . The Bishop of Como owned fiefdoms in the village , some of which were acquired in 1192 by the Agno monastery chapter . The village also belonged to the Pieve Agno under Milan and federal rule and until 1788 was under the parish of Iseo , whose parish church of Santa Maria Giovena (Juvenia) is located in the municipality. The community name was first mentioned in 1335.

The villagers lived on agriculture or emigrated as building craftsmen. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that Vernate developed into a residential community; In 2000, almost four fifths of the workforce were commuters.
