Rita Pavone
Rita Pavone (born August 23, 1945 in Turin ) is an Italian pop and hit singer . In the 1960s they achieved great success in Italy, but also abroad. She starred in several films over the course of her career and was seen frequently in the theater, especially in later years. She also moderated several programs on Italian television.
life and career
Beginnings
Pavone made her first appearance as a singer in 1959 with the song Swanee during an event for children. While working in a shirt factory, she began to expand her musical activities, always under the supervision of her father: she performed at student parties, at dance events, with an orchestra in nightclubs and in Turin theaters. She once went on tour with a folklore group from Hawaii . Her repertoire included songs by Bobby Darin , Frankie Avalon , Jerry Lee Lewis , Elvis Presley , Paul Anka , Brenda Lee , Bobby Rydell and Pat Boone . After the first attempts to get permanent engagements failed, Pavone wanted to retire in 1961.
But in 1962 Pavone was given the opportunity to take part in a new youth singing festival in Ariccia (near Rome). She won it and promoter Teddy Reno helped her to get her first record deal with the RCA label. Their first single contained the songs La partita di pallone and Amore twist and was exceptionally successful. In her first TV appearance, she appeared with the also up-and-coming Gianni Morandi . After further television appearances, the young singer released her first, self-titled album. Other successful singles from it were Come te non c'è nessuno , Alla mia età and Il ballo del mattone .
Successful years
In 1963 Pavone had her first film appearance in Clementine Cherie and went on tour with the band The Rokes , whereupon her second album Non è facile avere 18 years was released. The single Cuore became a summer hit beyond the country's borders and the B-side Il ballo del mattone also reached the top of the charts. In the same year she had her breakthrough in Germany: With the German version of the song Se fossi un uomo , If I were a boy , she reached number two in the German single charts. In 1964 the singer was launched on the American market, for which she recorded the English-language album The International Teen-age Sensation . With the single Remember Me she appeared on the influential Ed Sullivan Show and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 ; the album also hit the charts. The second American album Small Wonder was released that same year.
Meanwhile, Pavone was able to continue the success in her home country with hits like Cosa importa del mondo and Datemi un martello . There she was involved in the television series Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca by Lina Wertmüller , for which she recorded the music (by Luis Bacalov and Nino Rota ) and in which she played herself. The title song Viva la pappa col pomodoro was another great success in 1965, the album Burrasca topped the charts.
In 1964 the singer recorded the songs Mein Jack, der ist two meters tall and Peppino from Torino for the German-speaking market ; for this she was awarded the bronze Bravo Otto in Germany. In 1965 she had another big hit in German-speaking countries with Kiddy Kiddy Kiss Me , in a duet with Paul Anka . Pavone won the Italian Cantagiro competition in 1965 with Lui . In the same year she was the protagonist in the film Rita la figlia americana (alongside The Rokes and Totò ), performed her own TV show Stasera Rita and had other hits such as Supercalifragilistic-espiralidoso , Stasera Rita and Plip .
As early as 1966 Pavone was seen again as the protagonist of a film, in Rita la Zanzara . She got more hits with Solo tu and especially Qui ritronerà . She also recorded the title songs Il Geghegè and Fortissimo for the TV program Studio Uno . With the English versions of Cuore and Solo tu ( Heart and You Only You ), the singer also hit the British charts for the first time. In 1967 three films followed with Pavone: Non stuzzicate la Zanzara and Blue Beans for a Hallelujah (Little Rita nel West) and Stage Pigs (La Feldmarescialla) (both with Terence Hill ). She achieved chart successes with the singles Gira gira , a cover of Reach Out I'll Be There , and Pippo non lo sa , the theme song of the quiz show Chissà chi lo sa .
After that, Pavone left the RCA for the time being and reduced its activities. In 1968 she married her "discoverer" Teddy Reno, with whom she had had a secret relationship for several years, and shortly afterwards gave birth to a son. The marriage of the two caused a major scandal in Italy, on the one hand because of the age difference of 20 years, on the other hand because Reno was still married to his ex-wife, which could not be divorced due to the legal situation in Italy at that time. Pavone later published a number of children's songs under his own label Ritaland .
Later career
In the German-speaking countries, Rita Pavone published a few more German hits in the following years, including the most successful Arrivederci Hans (1968) and Bene Bene Bene (1969). With the song Zucchero she took part, relatively unsuccessfully, at the Sanremo Festival in 1969 ; In 1970 she returned to Sanremo with Ahi ahi ragazzo , but remained unsuccessful as in the previous year. Then she began a longer collaboration with Claudio Baglioni , from whom the single La suggestione (1971) came. She first appeared in the theater in the musical comedy Gli italiani vogliono cantare , and she returned to television with the new program Ciao Rita . At the 1972 Sanremo Festival she missed the final with Amici mai , and in 1973 she took part in Un Disco per l'Estate with L'amore è un poco matto . In 1972 she also released the single Bonjour la France for the French-speaking market.
Between 1975 and 1977 Pavone could be seen at the theater in Due sul pianerottolo , Risate in salotto and Quel diavolo di santarellina alongside Erminio Macario , Carlo Dapporto and Piero Mazzarella, respectively . She also released the cover album Rita per tutti (1975) and returned to the top 10 of the singles charts in 1977 with My Name Is Potato , the title song of the TV show Rita ed io . In 1979 she tried in vain to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest . In the preliminary round, she only reached fourth place with Dieci cuori . In the following years various albums with archive material and also with new music were released. On the album Gemma e le altre (1990) Pavone was also active as a songwriter. In 1992 she recorded the double live album Rita Is Magic on the occasion of her 30-year career . She also continued her activities on the theater stage. In 1995 the compilation Ritorna Rita Pavone with songs in Italian, English and French was published, in 1997 the autobiography Nel mio piccolo was published . At the Sanremo Festival 2005, Rita Pavone supported the participants Toto Cutugno and Annalisa Minetti on one evening . In the same year, she announced her withdrawal from the public.
In 2013, the singer returned with the cover album Masters , on which she interpreted successful titles by Fred Astaire , Judy Garland , Nat King Cole , Ray Charles , Frank Sinatra , Fats Domino , Bing Crosby , Andy Williams and Tony Bennett . At the Sanremo Festival 2017 she received the special prize for her life's work. In 2018 she went on tour in Brazil , in 2019 she was a juror in the casting show Sanremo Young . Finally, they took the song Niente (psychological resilience 74) at the Sanremo Music Festival in 2020 in part; the album RaRità was then released .
