The 19th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from January 30th to February 1st in the municipal casino in Sanremo in 1969 and was moderated by Nuccio Costa and Gabriella Farinon .
procedure
In 1969 Ezio Radaelli took over the overall management of the event again, after seven years under the direction of Gianni Ravera . The moderator duo was also new. A commission under Radaelli selected 24 competition entries in advance. The rules stipulated that on the first two evenings seven out of twelve songs reached the final on the third evening. As usual, each song was presented in two versions by two interpreters.
This year, the organizers (as part of the 1968 movement ) were uncomfortable with the announcement by Dario Fo and Franca Rame that they would organize a “counter-festival” with their theater group in the Villa Ormond in Sanremo. They received support from the Partito Comunista Italiano , the declared aim of the event was to reawaken “workers' consciousness” and to distract from the “bourgeois” Sanremo Festival. Although the municipality authorized the alternative festival, but at the same time it increased massively the police - Carabinieri - and military presence in the city, leading to the jocular designation Festival con l'elmetto ( "Festival with helmet led"). The RAI was beyond fear of disturbances of the planned festival run, the competition evenings always been the morning playback record.
Radaelli had announced a rejuvenated festival, but the field of participants again consisted to a large extent of familiar faces. Lucio Battisti , on the other hand, was new , after having played several times as a songwriter, he sang Un'avventura with Wilson Pickett . The youngest and most inexperienced participants were Rosanna Fratello (replacing Anna Identici , who tried suicide shortly before the festival ) and Nada . The already well known Rita Pavone also took part in the festival for the first time. The 18-year-old Stevie Wonder stood out among the international participants .
Despite all the fears of the organizers, the festival was able to take place undisturbed. The big favorite was the song Zingara in the interpretations of Iva Zanicchi and Bobby Solo , which was originally intended for Gianni Morandi , but who was not interested in participating in Sanremo. For this Morandi advertised openly for the song in advance at appearances. The juries finally confirmed the favorite (while they did not allow the likewise favored Claudio Villa and Mino Reitano for the final).
