Mino Reitano
Beniamino "Mino" Reitano (born December 7, 1944 in Fiumara near Reggio Calabria ; † January 27, 2009 in Agrate Brianza near Monza ) was an Italian singer , songwriter and actor .
Life
Reitano, a child of poor parents, whose mother died at birth at the age of 27, studied for eight years at the Conservatory of Reggio Calabria, with a focus on piano, violin and trumpet. Initially he appeared with his sister, then with his brothers Franco and Domenico as Fratelli Reitano (Reitano brothers). The rock 'n' roll trio released the first single Tu sei la luce / Non sei un angelo in 1961 . In the same year the brothers moved to Germany for a year and a half, where they also appeared in the Hamburg Star Club , alongside the Beatles , among others . Under his full first name, Mino Reitano also published some singles exclusively for the German market.
Back in Italy, Reitano took part in the Castrocaro Festival and finally the Sanremo Festival in 1967 , where he and The Hollies performed the song Non prego per me , written by Lucio Battisti and Mogol . Initially ignored (the song did not make it to the final), Reitano was able to record his first major success in 1968 with Avevo un cuore (che ti amava tanto) , which made it into the top 10 of the Italian single charts. In the same year he was able to surpass the success with Una chitarra, cento illusioni again. At the Sanremo Festival in 1969 he performed alongside Claudio Villa with the song Meglio una sera (piangere da solo) , which, however, again missed the final.
In the meantime he was so successful that he was able to acquire a larger homestead in Agrate Brianza near Monza, which he called "Reitanopoli" and where he settled with his entire extended family. In 1971 he again reached the top 10 with Una ferita in fondo al cuore and won the Un disco per l'estate competition with Era il tempo delle more . He also took part in the Canzonissima competition eight times in a row . He wrote almost all of his songs himself, often in collaboration with his brother Franco, and was also active as a songwriter for other artists (the best known is the song Una ragione di più from 1970, performed by Ornella Vanoni ; in 1972 his song La sveglia birichina won Zecchino d'Oro ).
Occasionally Reitano also appeared as an actor, for example in 1971 in Tara Pokì or a year later in the thriller Five Riddles to Death . At the Sanremo Festival in 1974 he reached the finals with Innamorati , after which he largely withdrew from the public for a long time. In 1976 he published the novel Oh Salvatore! . With the song Italia , written by Umberto Balsamo , Reitano made his comeback in Sanremo in 1988 and reached sixth place in the competition (as well as first place as a co-author in the newcomer category with Canta con noi for the Future group ). Further festival participation followed in 1990 (with Vorrei ), 1992 (with Ma ti sei chiesto mai ) and 2002 with La mia canzone .
In 2007 he was diagnosed with colon cancer. After two surgical interventions, the last one in November 2008, he died in January 2009 at the age of 64 on his homestead.
