The 24th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from March 7th to 9th in 1974 in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Corrado and Gabriella Farinon .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

The organization of the festival in 1974 was in the hands of Elio Gigante, Gianni Ravera and Vittorio Salvetti; all three had independently handled different issues in previous years. Corrado followed Mike Bongiorno as moderator , while the comoderation was entrusted to actress Gabriella Farinon, as in the previous year . Also this year, the Rai only broadcast the finale on television, the first two evenings were broadcast on the radio instead. New this year was the division of the candidates into two groups, with only four of the 14 “newcomers” making it to the final, while all of the others made it to the finals.

With Domenico Modugno , Nicola Di Bari and Iva Zanicchi three former winners of the festival were represented in the main group, other big names were Orietta Berti , Little Tony , Milva and Mino Reitano . On the other hand, three international groups each had their first appearance: the Dutch vocal duo Mouth & MacNeal , the French formation Les Charlots and the Scottish band Middle of the Road . Among the “newcomers” were Riccardo Fogli , who had just left his band Pooh , and Franco Simone , who won the 1972 Castrocaro Festival . The 19-year-old Donatella Rettore and the orchestra of the “King of Ballroom DancingRaoul Casadei also caused a stir in this group . There were important Sanremo debuts among songwriters with Cristiano Malgioglio and Claudio Baglioni .

In the final, Iva Zanicchi was able to surprisingly beat the favorite Modugno, who should no longer take part in the festival after this eleventh participation. For Zanicchi it was the third victory, which makes her the singer with the most Sanremo victories to this day (as of 2018). Overall, problems arose in the organization of the festival in 1974 with a series of mishaps, which in 1975 would lead to a low point.
