The 54th edition of the festival Italian Song Sanremo found in 2004 from 2 to 6 March at the Ariston Theater in Sanremo and was hosted by Simona Ventura , Paola Cortellesi and Gene Gnocchi moderated.
procedure
After the less successful 2003 festival, Pippo Baudo withdrew from the organization. Then the Rai took care of the former Sanremo winner Tony Renis with the artistic direction for 2004 . Renis was responsible for some radical changes: he abolished the newcomer category and replaced the previous voting system with combined juries with pure televoting . Simona Ventura , Paola Cortellesi and Gene Gnocchi were moderated by comedian Maurizio Crozza .
The major Italian record companies, represented by the FIMI , were in an open dispute with the Rai at the time, which is why they (with the exception of Universal ) boycotted the festival. As a result, 15 of the 22 participants were represented at the festival for the first time. Among the few names already known were Paolo Meneguzzi , Neffa , Mietta and Marco Masini . As guests came u. a. the Black Eyed Peas , Cirque du Soleil , Gino Paoli and Adriano Celentano .
Despite the difficult initial situation, the festival was received relatively positively by the public and critics. However, on Thursday evening it was overtaken in the ratings for the first time in its history by a Mediaset broadcast. The final was a success mainly because of the appearance of Adriano Celentano; Marco Masini won the competition with L'uomo volante , the critic's award went to Mario Venuti with Crudele .
