The 37th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1987 from February 4th to 7th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Pippo Baudo together with Carlo Massarini .
procedure
After Gianni Ravera died in May 1986, his son Marco took over the organization of the festival in 1987. This year the event was extended from three to four evenings and the number of participants rose to 40, of which 24 were in the main and 16 in the newcomer category. It stayed in half playback for appearances . Pippo Baudo returned as moderator , now for the fourth time in this role. Baudo tried to loosen up the ceremonial of the festival and had a brief conversation with the participants before their performances; A talk show on the third evening should also provide variety. Another innovation was the Palarock stage near the Ariston Theater, on which a large number of international guests appeared; Carlo Massarini took over the moderation .
Among the participants in this edition, the trio of Gianni Morandi , Enrico Ruggeri and Umberto Tozzi was the favorite from the start. Many other well-known names were in the running, including Toto Cutugno , Ricchi e Poveri , Marcella , Luca Barbarossa , Christian , Al Bano & Romina Power , Fausto Leali , Nada and Fiorella Mannoia . In the end, the favorites were able to prevail, ahead of Cutugno (who also took fourth, fifth and seventh place as an author) and Al Bano & Romina Power. Michele Zarrillo , who had already taken part for the third time, won the newcomers . However, the final was overshadowed by the death of Claudio Villas , which was announced in the middle of the evening of the final.

The winning song was then able to reach the top of the chart; Another nine festival entries reached the top 25 of the Italian single charts, including the winning song in the newcomer category. Among the performing guests after the festival, Simply Red and Whitney Houston were the most successful.
Italy also sent Umberto Tozzi to the Eurovision Song Contest 1987 , where he presented the song Gente di mare together with Raf and achieved third place.
