The 16th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in the municipal casino in Sanremo from January 27-29 , 1966 and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno together with Paola Penni and Carla M. Puccini .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

This year, two more songs were allowed than in previous years, so 13 songs were presented on the first two evenings. Six of them made it to the final, and two were “brought back” by their own jury, so that on the last evening a total of 14 songs competed for victory. An international partner was no longer mandatory, which meant that more Italian participants were again in the competition. Detto Mariano and Nello Ciangherotti made their debut among the orchestra's 21 conductors . The organization remained with Gianni Ravera , the moderation with Mike Bongiorno.

The combination of Domenico Modugno and Gigliola Cinquetti attracted a lot of attention in the field of participants , after all Modugno had sharply criticized Cinquetti's victory in 1964; but the now adult singer was able to present herself again. Other interesting compilations this year were Claudio Villa and Pino Donaggio as well as Ornella Vanoni and Orietta Berti . Adriano Celentano returned to the festival after five years and Bobby Solo was able to participate again despite resistance from the RAI . The young Lucio Dalla was new . From abroad, the band The Yardbirds and singer Pat Boone took part. Noticeable was the influence of the Beatlemania triggered beat wave on which groups like Equipe 84 or I Ribelli came to Sanremo.

The big discovery in 1966 was 19-year-old Caterina Caselli , who was able to convince with Nessuno mi può giudicare and her appearance. Other favorites were Sergio Endrigo with Adesso sì and Iva Zanicchi with La notte dell'addio . Stars like Celentano, Solo or Gino Paoli as well as the modern beat groups, however, failed the juries. In the finale there was an uproar when I Ribelli (her discoverer Celentano was present in the audience) allowed fans to celebrate and refused to leave the stage; to make Iva Zanicchi's next appearance possible, the organizers had to use the police. This caused outrage among those present of the Celentano clan and due to the angry protests the television broadcast had to be interrupted. Four people (including Miki Del Prete ) were subsequently reported for threatening an official.

The festival ended in 1966 with the victory of Dio, come ti amo , but Casellis Nessuno mi può giudicare proved to be the most successful competition entry of the year.
