New Christy Minstrels
The New Christy Minstrels is an American folk music group that was part of the popular folk music movement in the early 1960s and achieved several chart successes. The name is borrowed from the Christy Minstrels , a minstrel band founded by Edwin Pearce Christy in the 19th century , whose black-faced actors imitated African American artists and performed mainly songs by Stephen Foster . Her singers included Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor .
history
Founded in 1961 by Randy Sparks , the group was able to place several singles in the folk music Top 40 charts, including This Land Is Your Land , Green, Green and Ramblin ' . In 1964 they contributed the only film music to date with exclusively folk music for the film Advance to the Rear (with Glenn Ford and Stella Stevens ). The songs Today , This Old Riverboat and Company of Cowards are among the folk music standards today.
The cast of the group changed frequently and its most prominent members included:
- Gene Clark (later The Byrds )
- Jerry Yester (later on The Lovin 'Spoonful )
- Barry McGuire (1965 successful with his solo single Eve of Destruction )
- Larry Ramos (later singer with The Association )
- Kenny Rogers (later on The First Edition)
- Bob Buchanan (1967 member of the International Submarine Band with Gram Parsons , with whom he wrote the song Hickory Wind )
- Karen Black
- Kim Carnes
- Terry Ann Meeuwsen (formerly Miss America)
In 1964, Sparks founded the Back Porch Majority, a second folk group, including the later very successful singer John Denver . That same year, Sparks sold his rights to the New Christy Minstrels at the height of the group's career for $ 2,500,000. He later formed another band with the Green Grass Group , whose members included Larry Murray and Chris Hillman .
The Minstrels continued to record into the 1970s and split up in 1972. Today they give occasional concerts, again with Randy Sparks and a few other original members.
The Minstrels recorded the song Green, Green in several languages, including German.
