Barry McGuire (born October 15, 1935 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is a folk rock singer and guitarist who became known worldwide primarily for the hoarse voice of the protest song Eve of Destruction in 1965. Many radio stations initially boycotted the play; it has been sold more than five million times. The single reached number 1 in the US singles charts on September 25, 1965 and remained his only top 10 hit. In previous years, Barry McGuire was lead singer with the New Christy Minstrels . From 1971 he then produced exclusively Christian pop music . He moved to New Zealand in the mid-1980s and back to the United States in the mid-1990s, where he settled in California .
