The 23rd edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from March 8th to 10th in 1973 in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno and Gabriella Farinon .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

In 1973 the RAI decided to stop participating in the Sanremo Festival, amid protests not only from the Mayor of Sanremo. Only the final of the competition was televised. The organization passed to Vittorio Salvetti , while the moderator remained (for the sixth time) Mike Bongiorno , this time supported by the actress Gabriella Farinon . The number of participating songs was initially increased from 28 to 32, but Terra che non senti was disqualified by Rosa Balestrieri for violating the rules (the song had already been performed once) and L'unica chance was unable to participate because Adriano Celentano was ill for a short time, so that last 30 contributions were presented; 16 were able to qualify for the final on the first two evenings.

Celentano had polemically named the poor selection of songs by the previous jury as the reason for his illness; He was particularly critical of the exclusion of some well-known names such as Ivano Fossati , Lucio Dalla and Antonello Venditti , given the large number of newcomers who had made it into the selection. Nevertheless, some (budding) stars were also represented in 1973, such as Drupi , the actor Christian De Sica , the band JET (predecessor of Matia Bazar ) and Roberto Vecchioni . Among the newcomers, 19-year-old Gilda Giuliani , who was compared to Édith Piaf , made a name for herself: she finally reached fifth place. Otherwise, mainly well-known names could win the competition, Ricchi e Poveri , Milva and Peppino di Capri in first place (when he participated for the third time).

This year, the RAI used cameras with color recording for the first time to broadcast the final evening, although the broadcast on television in Italy continued to be in black and white, as color television was not yet widespread. The recording was long thought to be lost, but was found again in 2017.
