The 35th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1985 from February 7th to 9th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Pippo Baudo together with Patty Brard .
procedure
In 1985, organizer Gianni Ravera retained the concept of the previous year for the most part: strict separation of the main and newcomer categories, audience voting using totip bets in the main category and appearances in full playback . On the first evening, the 22 Campioni (two more than in the previous year) appeared with their contributions, all of which made it to the finals, while on the second evening eight of the 16 newcomer contributions were eliminated. Pippo Baudo remained the moderator , this time together with the Dutch television star Patty Brard (married to a nephew of Fiat President Giovanni Agnelli ).
Among the participants were Matia Bazar , Peppino di Capri , Riccardo Fogli and Gigliola Cinquetti, four former Sanremo winners. Two discoveries from the previous year were also in the running, Fiordaliso and Eros Ramazzotti . On the one hand, Zucchero , who had turned to the blues and performed with the Randy Jackson Band , and on the other, Anna Oxa , who presented her song written by Roberto Vecchioni in a particularly daring dress, caused a stir . The youngest participant was Luis Miguel , who was just 15 years old , who sang a song by Toto Cutugno . Many big names, on the other hand, did not make it through the preselection, not least Mia Martini .
The guest list of the festival this year again included many international stars such as Bronski Beat , Duran Duran , Spandau Ballet , Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora , Chaka Khan , Sade , José Luis Moreno , Talk Talk , Village People and Frankie Goes to Hollywood . Claudio Baglioni also had a big appearance with his hit Questo piccolo grande amore from 1972, where he was the only singer to sing live and accompanied himself on the piano.
The favorites Ricchi e Poveri were able to prevail in the final without any major surprises : their song Se m'innamoro , like the winning song of the previous year, came from the duo of Dario Farina and Cristiano Minellono. Shooting star Luis Miguel with Noi, ragazzi di oggi followed in second place and Gigliola Cinquetti with Chiamalo amore came third . The critical award went to Matia Bazar with Souvenir , in tenth place overall. In the newcomer category, Cinzia Corrado was able to secure victory with Niente di più , while the critical award went ex aequo to Mango with Il viaggio and Cristiano De André with Bella più di me .

successes
Eros Ramazzotti, who placed sixth, was soon considered to be the festival's “moral winner” and was able to celebrate great sales successes with his album Cuori agitati . Nine other festival entries reached the top 25 of the singles charts, in addition to Ramazzotti Luis Miguel also had a number one hit. No song from the newcomer category could enter the charts. The most successful song by a guest was The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
