Banco del Mutuo Soccorso , shortly Banco or BMS called, is an Italian progressive rock band that in 1968 Rome was founded.

Along with Premiata Forneria Marconi and Le Orme, the band is one of the big three of Italian progressive rock. Her style, which was harmoniously complex, especially in the early days, combines classical music , jazz , folk and rock and is characterized by operatic singing, sophisticated, fast keyboard playing and syncopated rhythms. With their suite-like pieces and their spectacular stage shows, they were able to make a name for themselves outside of Italy in the 1970s and inspired many other bands such as Sylvan , Ozric Tentacles , The Flower Kings and The Mars Volta . In the 1980s, the group turned more to the musical mainstream , which led to resentment among the audience and within the band. After countless line-up changes, the keyboardist Vittorio Nocenzi is currently the only remaining founding member of the still musically active group.

Band history

The group was founded on the initiative of the brothers Gianni and Vittorio Nocenzi (both keyboardists), who were influenced by British progressive rock bands such as Gentle Giant , Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Jethro Tull . The first line-up included guitarist Gianfranco Coletta, bassist Fabrizio Falco and drummer Franco Pontecorvi. But it wasn't until 1971 that the band formed with a stable line-up with Francesco Di Giacomo as singer, Renato D'Angelo on bass, Pierluigi Calderoni on drums and Marcello Todaro on guitar (alongside the Nocenzi brothers). She made her debut with the Dischi Ricordi label in 1972 with the album Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and, above all, the concise voice of Di Giacomo and his stage presence gave the group its first attention. The following year the concept album Darwin! , 1974 the album Io sono nato libero . Stylistically, the band presented dense, eclectic arrangements, some with jazz echoes and with a focus on Di Giacomo's operatic singing.

After the third album, guitarist Rodolfo Maltese took the place of Todaro. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso had now attracted attention across Europe. For the international market, the band recorded the English-language album Banco in 1975 , which contained mostly English versions of previously published titles. With that she went on tour in the USA. In 1976, however, she contributed the soundtrack to the film Garofano rosso by Luigi Faccini . In the same year the fourth Italian album Come in un'ultima cena was released , followed by the English version As in a Last Supper (with lyrics by Angelo Branduardi ). In 1978 the purely instrumental album … di terra , which the band had recorded with orchestra, followed. After bassist D'Angelo left the band, Gianni Colaiacomo joined the band as a new member.

In 1979 the band released the studio album Canto di primavera , followed by the live album Capolinea . She then turned away from progressive rock musically and was able to achieve chart success again with Urgentissimo (1980), the first album on the CBS label , above all thanks to the popularity of the song Paolo Pà . After the albums Buone notizie (1981) and Banco (1983), which stylistically proved to be very radio-friendly, but met with divided reactions from the audience, co-founder Gianni Nocenzi left the band. With Gabriel Amato as a new member, the band took part in the 1985 Sanremo Festival , where they presented the song Grande Joe , and released the next album in the same year … e via . Afterwards it became quiet around the group for the time being. In 1989 the album Donna Plautilla was released with recordings from the early days and singer Di Giacomo released the solo album Non mettere le dita nel naso , in which his bandmates were also involved.

Singer Francesco Di Giacomo (2009)

The renewed interest in progressive rock in the 1990s also revived the band's activities. After reissuing older productions, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso released the new album Il 13 in 1994 . Extensive international tours followed, with the line-up now including Nocenzi, Di Giacomo and Maltese, guitarist Filippo Marcheggiani, bassist Tiziano Ricci, drummer Maurizio Masi and Alessandro Papotto on clarinet, saxophone and flute. The next studio album Nudo was released in 1997. In the 2000s, mainly live albums and new editions of earlier albums appeared, and in 2011 Vittorio Nocenzi published the book Sguardo dall'estremo occidente . However, the band's activities were abruptly interrupted in 2014 by Di Giacomo's death in a traffic accident. In his memory, the live album Un'idea che non puoi fermare was released in the same year , with the participation of Italian actors such as Toni Servillo , Giuliana De Sio , Franca Valeri and Giuseppe Cederna .

Supported by guitarist Maurizio Solieri, singer John De Leo and percussionist Arnaldo Vacca, the band went on tour again in 2015. Rodolfo Maltese, a regular guitarist since 1973, died in October 2015 after a long illness. Tony D'Alessio, whom Di Giacomo had brought into the game as a potential successor himself before his death, was accepted as a new permanent singer in 2016. In 2019, more than 20 years after the release of the last studio album, the band returned with the concept album Transiberiana , which was received positively by audiences and critics alike.
