Sylvan is an art rock band from Hamburg .

history

Sylvan emerged in 1998 from the band Chameleon , which was founded in 1991 . The name is said to go back to the forest god Silvanus . After various attempts, the first CD entitled Deliverance came onto the market in 1999 . A year later the second CD was released with the title Encounters . The responsible record company in both cases was Angular Records , where shortly before Lana Lane had already released an album and later u. a. Max Pie should follow. 2002, the third album came Artificial Paradise on the market, followed by X-Rayed in 2004. Sylvan played at the end of 2005 Marillion as opening act .

In 2006 two albums were recorded that represent the different expressions of Sylvan. While Posthumous Silence, a rather calm concept album, came on the market, in which music and text subordinate themselves to a line of content in order to create an artistic overall work, the album Presets , released in 2007, with its mostly shorter songs, is much more catchy.

In July 2008, Sylvan's first live DVD was released, which was recorded on September 1, 2007 in Kampnagel , Hamburg . It contains a recording of the complete Posthumous Silence show. At the same time, the live double CD Leaving Backstage was released , which, in addition to the songs from the DVD, also contains the second set played that evening, which represents a foray through all of Sylvan's previous albums. In August 2009 the long awaited seventh studio album was released.

At the 2010 Christmas concert, Sylvan das ReRelease presented their debut album Deliverance . In addition to a changed artwork and a revised version of A Fairytale Ending , the second CD comes with a bonus track. The Lie is 12½ minutes long and is a new composition from previously unpublished material from the Deliverance compositional phase. Sylvan deliberately worked with the instruments of the time so that the song fits into the other pieces of Deliverance.

On January 27, 2012, the band released a double album entitled Sceneries . The concept album deals with the ups and downs of life and the human pursuit of happiness. After the music was finished, every single chapter was given to a band member as a sponsor. From that moment on, the content and fine-tuning were determined by the respective band member.

On February 19, 2015, Sylvan released another concept album called Home .

style

The band itself describes their music as "powerful and multi-layered sound with emotional depth". The fourth album with the title X-Rayed was released in 2004 and corresponds to the musical self-assessment of the band. The pieces include elements that are reminiscent of Pink Floyd , Genesis or Eloy . Sylvan's music shows borrowings from a wide variety of styles. Reviews also compare the style to neo-prog or progressive metal .
