Randall "Randy" Darius Jackson (born June 23, 1956 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) is an American bass player , singer and music producer . He is best known for his work as a jury member for the American talent show American Idol and as a producer of MTV 's America's Best Dance Crew .

Life

Jackson was born in Baton Rouge , Louisiana in 1956. His first marriage to Elizabeth Jackson, with whom he has a daughter named Taylor, was divorced in 1990. In 1995 he married Erika Riker, with whom he has a daughter named Zoe and a son named Jordan. In 2003 he lost 52 kg after gastric bypass surgery. In February 2008, he announced on television that he had type 2 diabetes .

Career

music

At the beginning he played in bands with Carlos Santana and Jerry García . In the early 1980s he recorded three albums with Jean-Luc Ponty and the rock band Taxxi. From 1986 to 1987 he was a member of the rock band Journey .

As a bass guitarist, he worked with numerous musicians. These include Tracy Chapman , Kenny G , Aldo Nova , Blue Öyster Cult , Jon Bon Jovi , Michael Bolton , Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown , Brent Bourgeois , Billy Cobham , Marcus Deml , Bob Dylan , Aretha Franklin , Herbie Hancock , Imogen Heap , Ernie Isley , Billy Joel , Madonna , Richard Marx , George Michael , Stevie Nicks , Bruce Springsteen and Roger Waters . He was also a producer for Whitney Houston and * NSYNC , as a music director for Mariah Carey .

On March 11, 2008, Jackson released his first album of his own called Randy Jackson's Music Club, Vol. 1 . His first single from it was Dance Like There's No Tomorrow sung by Paula Abdul . In 2009 he worked with former American Idol finalist Kimberley Locke and produced her fourth album. In February 2010 he recorded the song We Are the World 25 for Haiti as part of the Artists for Haiti .

American Idol

Jackson has been a jury member for the American talent show American Idol since 2002 . He worked with Paula Abdul (2002–2009), Simon Cowell (2002–2010), Kara DioGuardi (2009–2010), Ellen DeGeneres (2010), Jennifer Lopez (2011–2012) and Steven Tyler (2011–2012). In the twelfth season, in addition to Jackson, Mariah Carey , Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban could be seen in the jury. Then the last remaining member of the original jury got out of the show.

America's Best Dance Crew

Jackson is the producer of America's Best Dance Crew TV show on MTV . The first broadcast on American television was on February 7, 2008. On June 13, 2012 the seventh season ended. Each week, different groups showcase their talent in terms of choreography and dance - skills before a group is voted out by the jury at the end. The winner receives prize money of € 100,000.
