The 13th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from February 7th to 9th in 1963 at the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

For the second time, the festival was organized by Gianni Ravera . Star presenter Mike Bongiorno made his debut at the Sanremo Festival this year and should present ten other editions. At Bongiorno's side were the four women Rosanna Armani, Giuliana Copreni, Maria Giovannini and Edy Campagnoli. Much to Bongiorno's dissatisfaction, the RAI barely left him room in the program, probably in order not to distract too much from the competition, and (as in the previous year) only broadcast the final evening live on television. The orchestras were directed by Cinico Angelini and Gianni Ferrio .

Ravera had meanwhile also taken over the organization of the Castrocaro Festival and determined that the winners (this year Eugenia Foligatti and Gianni Lacommare) automatically qualify for the Sanremo Festival. Otherwise, there were hardly any debutants among the Sanremo participants, the favorites were, without any major surprises, Claudio Villa, Milva and last year's discovery Tony Renis. This year, the vote was again completely transferred to the juries: 20 across the entire national territory and one 112 in the audience of the casino. From the twenty songs presented, five each qualified for the final on Thursday and Friday evening.

What promised to be a head-to-head race between Claudio Villas Amor, mon amour, my love and Milvas Ricorda turned into an unexpectedly contested podium on the last evening: The younger generation, above all Renis / Pericoli, Donaggio / Mazzetti, and Dorelli / De Angelis, was able to convince the juries, and so Uno per tutte won this edition of the festival rather unexpectedly . Claudio Villa managed to get second, while Milva slipped to fifth.

successes

Five entries from this edition of the festival (the top five of the finalists) were subsequently able to reach the top 15 of the single charts. The winning song reached number one and was later presented by Emilio Pericoli at the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest , where it came in third. Pino Donaggio's Giovane giovane sold the most , but overall sales of Sanremo contributions in 1963 were rather weak.
