The sixth edition of the festival Italian Song Sanremo found in 1956 from 8 to 10 March at the Municipal Casino in Sanremo and was organized by Fausto Tommei and Maria Teresa Ruta moderated.
procedure
After the much favored Claudio Villa won last year , the RAI decided to only allow unknown singers to compete so that the jury's vote would again assess the quality of the song. For this purpose, an Italy-wide competition for new singing talents was announced, in which almost 6,500 people took part. The final of the preselection, broadcast live on the radio, took place from January 12th to 14th, during which the radio audience could vote by sending in postcards; Six of the twelve finalists qualified for the Sanremo Festival. In addition to this renewal of the field of participants, the rule that each song is presented in two versions has been abolished again.
Maria Teresa Ruta was retained from the moderator duo of the last edition, with Fausto Tommei appearing at her side; the latter had already moderated the final of the newcomer competition in advance. The orchestra was completely replaced, conductors were Gian Stellari and the British George Melachrino . Ten songs were presented on each of the first two days, five of which could qualify for the final after being assessed by the jury. The winner of this edition was Franca Raimondi with the song Aprite le finestre , which conjured up spring after one of the harshest winters of the 20th century.
On the evening after the finale, the RAI organized a musical review of the past five years of the festival, where former participants and other participants were guests.

successes
For the Eurovision Song Contest , which took place for the first time in 1956 , the RAI sent both the winner Raimondi and the runner-up Tonina Torrielli with their respective Sanremo entries; the placements are unknown. In fact, Tonina Torrielli was the only participant in this edition of the Sanremo Festival who subsequently pursued a singing career; the rest of the selected newcomers quickly disappeared from the scene, including the winner Raimondi. The songs in the competition fared a little better; only Musetto (La più bella sei tu) , written by the young Domenico Modugno , later gained popularity.
