George Melachrino

George Miltiades Melachrino (born May 1, 1909 in London , † June 18, 1965 ) was a British musician, band leader, arranger and composer.

Life

Melachrino was considered a musical child prodigy , he began to compose at the age of four and made his first appearance as a violinist at the age of thirteen. He studied at Trinity College of Music , where he led a jazz band. He played with the Savoy Orpheans and conducted the English band of the Allied Expeditionary Forces during World War II; Glenn Miller headed the American, Robert Farnon the Canadian.

After the end of the war he founded the Melachrino organization and directed his own orchestra and the Malachrino Strings. He wrote and produced music for films, concerts, radio and records. He arranged for numerous bands, including those of Boyd Raeburn and Red Nichols . Melachrino was a typical representative of mood music , who recorded around fifty LPs for RCA , later also for ABC-Paramount . The orchestra was continued by Robert Mandell for some time after his death.
