The 38th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1988 from February 24th to 27th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Miguel Bosé and Gabriella Carlucci together with Carlo Massarini .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

The 1988 festival largely followed the previous year's successful model. It stayed with a duration of four evenings, whereby these were again significantly extended by a large number of international guests. On Friday the talk show Il processo al Festival took place in the casino, but it turned out to be a failure. The Palarock outdoor stage for guest performances was also retained, moderated by Carlo Massarini . The contributions were still presented in half playback . The number of participants rose from 40 to 42, including 26 in the main and 16 in the newcomer category. The singer Miguel Bosé and the presenter Gabriella Carlucci were hired as the new moderator duo .

Many well-known faces were among the participants, such as Toto Cutugno , Anna Oxa , Fiordaliso and Peppino Di Capri . Raf and Francesco Nuti were new ; Biagio Antonacci and Mietta made their debut among the newcomers . Like Ron, Mino Reitano returned to the festival after a long absence, but among those returning the greatest attention was Massimo Ranieri , who had last been in Sanremo in 1969 and has preferred the theater stage to music for many years: with the song Perdere l'amore , originally submitted by Gianni Nazzaro last year , he was considered the clear favorite from the start.

While no eliminations were planned for the main category, the competition for newcomers ran through three rounds; on the first two evenings four entries were eliminated, on the third evening another four, from which a winner was finally chosen in the final: the band Future , which had participated for the second time. In the main category, the favorite Massimo Ranieri won by a large margin ahead of Toto Cutugno and Luca Barbarossa .

Big highlights of the finals were the appearance of Paul McCartney and a live link to the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary , where Alberto Tomba won the slalom. In addition to McCartney, George Harrison , Bon Jovi , Joe Cocker , Terence Trent D'Arby , Toto and Bryan Ferry were among the star guests of this edition .
